At Powick CE Primary School, we believe that every child is unique, valued and deserves the opportunity to thrive. Inclusion is at the heart of everything we do, reflecting our Christian ethos and our commitment to ensuring that every pupil feels safe, supported and a true part of our school family.
We recognise that children learn and develop in different ways and at different rates. Our approach to includes high expectations, strong relationships, early identification and removing barriers to learning.
Inclusion is not simply about supporting children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). It is about ensuring that every child has what they need to succeed, whether this involves additional academic support, emotional wellbeing, physical development, communication, social skills or opportunities for greater challenge.
We use a graduated, three-wave approach to ensure that children receive the right support, at the right time. Support is flexible, regularly reviewed and adapted as children's needs change.
This is the foundation of our inclusive approach. All children benefit from high-quality teaching, positive relationships, adaptive teaching strategies and supportive classroom environments.
Teachers use a range of approaches to ensure learning is accessible, appropriately challenging and engaging for everyone.
Some children benefit from additional, focused support to help them overcome specific barriers or develop particular skills.
This might include small-group interventions, additional phonics or maths support, social skills development, emotional wellbeing activities or physical development programmes.
Support is carefully planned and reviewed to ensure it makes a difference.
A smaller number of children may require a more personalised approach, including individual support, specialist advice, tailored resources or adaptations to their learning environment.
We work closely with families, our SENDCo and external professionals to ensure that support reflects each child's individual strengths and needs.
Our three waves are not labels or fixed stages. Children may access different types of support at different times, and some may benefit from more than one wave simultaneously.
A child does not need a SEND diagnosis to receive additional support, and accessing an intervention does not automatically mean that a child has SEND.
We are committed to working in partnership with parents and carers, listening to children's voices and celebrating progress in all its forms.
At Powick, inclusion means belonging, participating, achieving and flourishing together.
Inclusion can be seen in practice throughout the school. This includes:
-Calm corners in every classroom
-Sensory spaces across the school
-Calm learning environments with neutral colours and reduced stimulation
-Forest School accessed by all children
-Adapted learning available for all
