An understanding of vocabulary is a key indicator in successful comprehension, especially in subjects that have specific vocabulary such as science and maths . At Powick CofE Primary School we use Word Aware, a whole school approach to teaching targeted vocabulary. This is taught in addition to VIPERS (Vocabulary, Inference, Prediction, Explanation, Retrieval and Sequencing) reading comprehension skills
Classroom accommodations may include:
Working walls in maths and English with examples of useful vocabulary
A vocabulary display of words that have been taught
A multi-sensory approach to teaching vocabulary
Knowledge organisers for history, geography and science that define subject specific vocabulary
Labelled resources (with pictures to support in Reception and Year 1)
Interventions may include:
Language for Thinking that teaches children to infer meaning from pictures, spoken and written language
1:1 / small group reading
Pupil conferencing
