What is Pupil Premium?

The government introduced the Pupil Premium Grant in April 2011. It applies to pupils who are: entitled to free school meals (FSM) looked after children and service children as indicators of need. The government provides a fixed amount of money for schools per pupil based on the number of pupils registered for FSM over a rolling six year period. 

This grant, which is additional to main school funding, is seen by the government as the best way to address the current underlying inequalities between children eligible for free school meals (FSM) and their peers, by ensuring that funding to tackle disadvantage reaches the pupils who need it most. The Pupil Premium is allocated to schools and is clearly identifiable. Schools can decide how the Pupil Premium is spent, since they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for the individual pupils, within their responsibility.

How is the money allocated?

• Pupils in year groups Reception to Year 6 recorded as Ever 6 free school meals are allocated £1,455 
• Looked-after children (LAC) defined in the Children Act 1989 as one who is in the care of, or provided with accommodation by, an English local authority are allocate £2,530 
• Children who have ceased to be looked after by a local authority in England and Wales because of adoption, a special guardianship order, a child arrangements order or a residence order are allocated £2530
• Service children-Pupils in year groups Reception to Year 11 recorded as Ever 6 service child or in receipt of a child pension from the Ministry of Defence are allocated £335

Who has responsibility for how the Pupil Premium Grant is spent?

The school has overall responsibility in how the grant is spent.  They must ensure that the spending is visible through the budget and accounting systems used by the school.

The Pupil Premium Coordinator (Headteacher) is the appointed member of staff who becomes the custodian of The Pupil Grant to ensure that the spending impacts the children in receipt of the grant.  Schools must report on how much money the school received, how it was spent and the impact the spending had.

PE and Sports Grant 

Each year state funded schools are allocated a PE and Sports Grant which must be used to fund improvements to the provision of PE and sport so that pupils can develop healthy lifestyles.

In order to ensure the PE & Sports Grant money is well spent and supports both current and future pupils the Governors, Head of School and PE co-ordinator have carefully evaluated current provision, sought pupil’s views and plan to spend the allocation in a targeted and sustainable way.
