Spelling

Spelling starts in Reception with Phonics Play, that is based on Letters and Sounds and teaches children to segment words into individual phonemes and represent them with graphemes. As children move into Year 1 and Year 2 they are taught alternative graphemes to represent the phonemes that they hear in words and to make a choice as to which is correct. Alongside phonics they are taught how to spell tricky words that do not follow the phonic rules. In Year 2 to Year 6 childen are taught to spell using the No Nonsense Spelling Scheme.

Support for children who find spelling difficult may include:

  • Small group phonic / spelling sessions
  • Phonic mats with graphemes to refer to when spelling
  • Tricky word lists
  • Working walls with key vocabulary
  • Multi-sensory spelling strategies
